Phone numbers to major record labels

Anyone who has ever been in a band can tell you how difficult it is when you make the decision to try to get professional representation. Record company executives are hard to get to and even if you call phone numbers to major record labels, no one can guarantee that you will ever speak to someone of consequence or influence. Actually getting your demo in the hands of one of these people is even more difficult. All of these can just lead to more and more frustration as you try harder and harder to get the right kind of exposure.

Despite this difficulty, you can still get your album recorded and produced, if you do it yourself. New technologies are always evolving which make this traditionally expensive and specialized process much easier to use by the everyday musician. Freeware, shareware, and open source software also make these products absolutely free, and even if there are any charges, they are nothing like what you would expect. Most of these programs will allow you to use USB peripherals like microphones to record music acoustically. You can mix and master your tracks and add necessary background music with more available programs.

At this point, you could start your own record label, if you wanted to. By definition, a traditional record label is really just a company who is in the business of making and distributing music. You have accomplished half of this by recording your own songs. With the social media channels on the internet, it will be very easy to satisfy the distribution requirement this definition too.

However, to make your record label legit, you will need to do a couple of things. The first one seems very obvious and silly, but you need to determine what you want to name your label. You will then need to file a Fictitious Name statement, which will copyright your name and protect you from infringements. Next, you need to choose if you will manage a sole proprietorship, a partnership, or a corporation. If you are the only person involved, you will choose the first. If you have one or more partners, you will choose the second. Anything larger than that and you will need legal counsel to set up your corporation. Finally, file for a tax ID so you can legally profit and claim tax advantages from your new independent business. If you want to, you can also file for a retail license, to be allowed to sell your records directly to the public.
